I’m laying on top of my sleeping bag because the wood burning stove has turned this confined space into a sauna. I stare at the rough-sawn boards of the ceiling barely 12 inches in front of my face, as the soldier on the bunk below me coughs and shifts his position. The overwhelming heat is a stark contrast to my body’s recent memory. For the past three days I have been sleeping in temperatures below 0 degrees and I can't remember the last time I felt such warmth. I am in a little man-made cave, burrowed underground with remarkable craftsmanship. It’s not fancy by any means, but it is well-designed and supported with massive logs.
